(February 6, 2025) Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education is currently accepting submissions for our Summer 2025 edition. We invite scholars, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to contribute articles that explore various aspects of curiosity in theory and practice as they relate to education.
Curiosity is the heart of learning, yet it seems to be disappearing in educational institutions. Why are students, from kindergarten to college, less inclined to ask questions? How do rigid curricula, standardized testing, and social or cultural norms stifle the innate curiosity of young minds? And how do traditional pedagogical practices in higher education—such as lecture-dominant teaching and assessment-driven learning—further discourage inquiry and intellectual risk-taking? What can educators and policymakers do to reignite the spark of inquiry and wonder in our classrooms?
Scope
We invite submissions that critically explore the role of curiosity in education and why it appears to be waning across all levels of schooling. We are particularly interested in:
- The historical and cultural contexts of curiosity in education.
- The impact of testing culture, technology, and social expectations on student inquiry.
- How higher education pedagogy often discourages curiosity and independent thinking.
- Case studies or innovative programs that successfully promote curiosity in schools and universities.
- The philosophical and psychological underpinnings of curiosity and how they intersect with pedagogy.
- Educators’ reflections on fostering curiosity in restrictive environments, including K-12 and higher education.
- We welcome diverse perspectives, including theoretical analyses, empirical research, narrative essays, and creative approaches to the theme.
